Evaluate the workflow, not the checklist.
IcePanel offers a documented shared-model product. Flowboard combines portable architecture models with visual editing, review and agent access. This is not a claim of feature parity.
Where the products differ today
| Workflow | IcePanel: documented | Flowboard: capabilities and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Shared architecture | Its pricing page describes shared model changes across diagrams, search, draft designs and decision records. Plan details | Workspace models reuse the same architecture objects across views, with inventory, dependencies, drafts and decision records. Importing a standalone diagram leaves the original intact. Workspace permissions also apply to history and exports. |
| Agent connection | Paid-plan MCP supports model/ADR reads and writes; diagram creation, drafts, versions and comments are listed as unsupported tools. OAuth and several client recipes are documented. MCP documentation | Scoped credentials let you grant an agent read, propose or write access to selected resources. Proposals require human approval. OAuth connections require a supported registered client. |
| Portable editing | JSON model export and Markdown summaries are documented. Its UI import has a different schema, does not create diagrams, and is not documented as an edit-export-reimport loop. Exports · Imports | Standalone diagrams support JSON, YAML and readable Markdown. Workspace identity manifests preserve shared IDs. The IcePanel adapter only handles an observed public JSON profile: original backup and an unmapped-field report are mandatory; supported controlled tags and compatible ordered scenarios are mapped. Original layout geometry, reusable source views and unobserved team records remain explicit backup-only data. |
| Buying and readiness | A free plan and paid editor-based plans are published. The observed USD annual-billing Growth price is $40/editor/month; always verify current terms. Current pricing | Free Personal does not expire. Team costs $39 per editor/month or $420 per editor/year, with self-service checkout and billing management. Choose with your own workflow
Compare both products using the same model, collaborators and agent client. Check the plan requirements and confirm that imports, permissions and exports meet your needs before switching tools. This comparison is not a measured usability or performance ranking.
A reversible evaluation
- Choose an internal, non-sensitive example. Keep your current tool authoritative and export an original backup before any import. Do not upload credentials or customer architecture during an initial evaluation.
- Download the event-commerce JSON and open its isolated Flowboard draft. Rename the API, export JSON/YAML/Markdown, import into a separate draft, and compare IDs, hierarchy, flows and labels. A successful file download alone does not pass.
- To evaluate advanced features, use a disposable workspace. Preview an IcePanel export, inspect every warning, download the original-file backup and confirm only if the omitted data is acceptable. Generated placement is not layout fidelity. Cancel before confirmation for a no-write exit.
- Connect an agent only to an explicitly selected disposable diagram. Test read access, reject an unrelated ID, submit a small proposal, inspect it as a human, approve deliberately, and recover the prior revision. Revoke the credential and verify a subsequent request fails. Use a plan that includes workspace review and the agent connection you want to evaluate.
- Invite a small pilot with owner/editor/viewer roles. Check private boundaries, concurrent edits, recovery and export before considering a switch. Keep source backups and the original workspace until your team has verified the results. No automatic destructive cutover is performed.
- Record the build, plan, browser/client, exact steps, failures and data loss. Send sanitized findings through support; never include tokens. If a required feature fails, stop the switch and continue using the original source.
Examples, not customer proof
Event-driven commerce illustrates an API-to-topic-to-worker explanation. Kubernetes delivery illustrates a deployment boundary. Both are illustrative examples, not customer case studies or endorsements.
